  9. GALLEY PROOFS, text proofed in continuous columns, not divided into
  10. pages.
  11. GATE FOLD, a single sheet of paper folded twice vertically to make six
  12. pages.
  13. GRAIN, the direction in which a sheet of paper is made and along which
  14. it folds most readily.
  15. GRID, the rectangular structure of a page layout.
  16. GUTTER, the space between columns; also the two inside margins of
  17. facing pages.

  21. HALF-TITLE, the first page of a book, usually attached to the front
  22. end paper, or, pages dividing sections within a document.
  23. HALFTONE, a photograph broken up into fine dots for reproduction.
  24. HANGING INDENT, text with the first line set flush left and subsequent
  25. lines indented.
  26. HEAD, the top margin of a page.
  27. HOT METAL, technically type from a casting machine, but widely used
  28. for any type set in relief on a metal body.

  32. IMPOSITION, the arrangement of pages on a printing plate so that when
  33. the sheet is folded the sequence of pages is correct.
  34. IMPRINT, printed bibliographical and copyright information. Also the
  35. term used for the issuing publisher.
  36. INDENT, space inserted at the beginning of a line(s).
  37. INFERIOR FIGURES, small numerals which appear below the baseline.
  38. Sometimes called "subscript".
  39. INITIAL LETTER, a single letter, bigger than the text, usually used to
  40. mark the beginning of a chapter or section.
  41. INSIDE, the margin on a page nearest to the fold.

  45. JUSTIFIED TEXT, spacing out the words in a line so that all the lines
  46. in the column are the same width.

  50. KERN, adjusting the inter-character spacing so that part of a
  51. character overhangs another to increase readability and evenness of
  52. spacing.

  55.  
  56. LAID, paper with a clearly visible wire pattern.
  57. LAYOUT, the arrangement of text and graphics on a page.
  58. LEADERS, a row of dots, or similar, intended to lead the reader's eye
  59. from one piece of text to another.
  60. LEADING, space between lines of text. Also called LINE FEED.
  61. LEAF, a single sheet in a document with one page on each side, eg an 8
  62. page booklet has 4 leaves.
  63. LETTERPRESS, printing from relief type.
  64. LIGATURE, two or more characters joined together to ensure proper
  65. spacing. (NOTE , I know of no S/W or PD type that have ligatures)
  66. LINE ILLUSTRATION or ART, those made up of lines and solid areas,
  67. without continuous tone.
  68. LINING FIGURES, numerals that align with the capitals. Non-lining or
  69. hanging figures, are based on the lower case x-height.
  70. LOGOTYPE or LOGO, a word or name rendered in a specific way as in a
  71. trademark.

  75. MARGINS, the area of paper between the text and the edges of a page.
  76. MEASURE, the width of a column of text.

  80. NEWSPRINT, a low quality paper intended for newspapers and other
  81. short lived publications.
